Women of the US Senate are raising their voices for Aung San Suu Kyi.
In a recent
letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, members of the U.S. Senate Women's Caucus on Burma urged the Secretary General to call on Burma's military regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi immediately and unconditionally.
Join these women in raising your voice for Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma by participating in
Arrest Yourself 2009.
What is "Arrest Yourself"?
The U.S. Campaign for Burma organizes the "Arrest Yourself" campaign annually as a show of solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been locked up by Burma's military regime for 13 of the last 19 years.
When you sign up to "Arrest Yourself" you are agreeing to stay home for 24 hours under self-imposed house arrest one day between now and Aung San Suu Kyi's 64th birthday on June 19th. During your house arrest, you will invite friends and family to your home for a few hours to educate them about Aung San Suu Kyi and the situation in Burma.
We will mail you all of the materials that you need, including DVDs, petitions, recipes for Burmese food and info sheets once you sign up. Please also collect donations from your friends and guests to help make our work possible. We will also send you tools to make this easier.
Watch our video to learn more about how Arrest Yourself works, and what we're asking you to do. Every year, Arrest Yourself events educate thousands of people about Aung San Suu Kyi and raise thousands of dollars for the campaign to free her and all of Burma's political prisoners.
Sign up here on our website to "Arrest Yourself" and join the women of the United States Senate in raising your voice for Suu Kyi and Burma.
In addition to calling for Suu Kyi's release, the Senators' lettter also called on the Secretary General to urge Than Shwe's regime to:
Release all political prisoners immediately and unconditionally;
Abandon plans for the upcoming election and facilitate a genuine and time bound tripartite dialogue towards national reconciliation between Aung San Suu Kyi, the military regime and ethnic nationality representatives, as called for in the UNSC Presidential Statement of October 11, 2007;
Cease human rights abuses against civilians; and
Eliminate rape as an instrument of war and human trafficking and bring those who have condoned and committed such acts to justice
